Where to begin...
I have played this game since release. In that time, I have seen the "high end" of original WoW, and TBC. I differentiate the two because they are indeed two different games. Now, we are on the eve of a new game being released: Wrath of the Lich King.
Blizzard has made it apparent that they do not want to foster an environment geared towards character advancement, nor individuality. Blizzard has taken an approach to game design that can best be compared to a child building a sand castle, only to tear it down with glee. Everything a person accomplishes in this game is inevitably trivialized at some point, either due to the player base crying or Blizzard destroying it themselves.
I want to direct you to www.MMO-champion.com for reference. In the coming patch and expansion, we are going to be presented with multiple changes to game and class mechanics. Not the least of which, is in regards to hybrid dps and hybrid tanking when compared to classes dedicated to these roles. These changes show me that Blizzard does not know the true meaning of what being a hybrid class means.
In a game with various classes, which are supposed to bring to the table varied abilities, advantages, and disadvantages, we are now seeing changes implemented which can be described as nothing more than communism for MMOs. It saddens me that Blizzard can not place the integrity of the game above the cries of people interested only in weather or not they can top a damage meter, or beat a rogue in 2v2 arena games. What happened to the days of playing to have fun, make new friends, and watch stuff die?
It doesn't matter so much that you can deal more damage than someone else, so much as it matters that you're accomplishing something, and having fun. My advice to those of you playing this game, is to remember - Blizzard has insured that your advancement within this game is fleeting; do not place loot, your arena rating, your advancement, or this game as a whole above anything else. In the end, you may find that life can be just as fleeting.
I could rant on this topic for hours, but I will leave you with a video which I believe adequately describes the problem and direction of World of Warcraft, as well as most MMOs and games on the market today, as well as this statement:
When everyone is uber, no one is uber.
